http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/muglia_winserver.asp

BM: One thing we've found is that 32-bit applications run better on the 64-bit OS than they do on 32-bits. Just adding a 64-bit processor and the 64-bit OS changes everything.

Paul: Now what are you comparing there? Are these machines running the same clock speed...

BM: Same everything. Same chips, same everything. We run apps on 32-bit Windows, and then take those same apps and run them on 64-bit Windows, and you'll get about an 8 percent performance improvement on average.

Dette var bare på 32-bits programmer på et 64-bits OS, men de følgende sakene gir et lite hint om hvilken ytelsesforbedring man kan forvente seg med 64-bits programmer:

Wolfram Research Optimizes Mathematica for Linux on AMD64

Wolfram Research continues to provide advanced technical computing options for the latest and most-advanced microprocessor systems with the release of Mathematica 5 and gridMathematica for Linux on AMD64. As a reflection of Wolfram Research's rigorous software engineering standards, Mathematica 5 is among the first technical computing platforms specifically optimized for the AMD64 architecture--and it delivers impressive performance. The optimized Mathematica port outperforms a regular Linux version of Mathematica on AMD64 systems by up to 50 percent in typical scientific and technical calculations.

"Mathematica 5 for AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Opteron processors helps ensure that applications take full advantage of the AMD64 architecture performance benefits," said Ed Gasiorowski, director of Developer Relations, AMD's Computation Products Group. "Especially when dealing with large data sets, greater than the 4-GB limit addressed by 32-bit processors, Mathematica 5 will help deliver exceptional application performance."

"We consider AMD's 64-bit microprocessors a natural step in the evolution of the x86 architecture and an attractive platform for Mathematica 5 with its performance-oriented advanced algorithms. Existing Mathematica applications can now run without modification but significantly faster on AMD processor-based systems from desktops to supercomputers. Users often ask what the real benefits of 64-bit computing are, and we believe that Mathematica is part of the answer," says Peter Overmann, director of Software Technology at Wolfram Research.

New 64-Bit Applications Demonstrate Performance Increases Up To 57 Percent

Built for 64-bit computing, Crafty has grown from a simple PC-based computer chess program to one that runs on all known general-purpose platforms. Benchmark testing shows the 64-bit version of Crafty running on the AMD Athlon FX-53 processor outperformed the 32-bit version by almost 47 percent. The 64-bit version also evaluates more nodes per second than the 32-bit engine.

“Crafty is a program built for the 64-bit architecture on an AMD Athlon 64 processor-enabled system. With AMD64 technology, developing Crafty with a unique methodology called ‘rotated bitmaps’ enabled me to significantly improve the performance of the chess engine,” said Robert Hyatt, author of Crafty and associate professor, University of Alabama at Birmingham. “The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor-powered system is the fastest I have seen. I can’t see anybody buying anything else.”

Crafty has won several chess competitions including bi-annual events held by the Internet Chess Club. Most recently, Hyatt used AMD64 technology to compete in and win the Internet Computer Chess Tournament in February.

The Panorama Factory (www.panoramafactory.com), built by Smoky City Design, seamlessly joins separate photos into a single high-quality panoramic picture. As digital photography continues to stretch the limits of 32-bit computing, AMD64 technology enables The Panorama Factory to create larger panoramas with more pictures than what is possible on a 32-bit architecture. The 64-bit version also can complete a full panorama up to 57 percent faster compared to 32-bit versions.

“Applications like The Panorama Factory are typically restricted by 32-bit architectures that limit the amount of virtual memory available. When ported to the AMD64 platform, The Panorama Factory breaks the 32-bit barrier to create images that are almost unlimited in size,” said John Strait, author of The Panorama Factory. “AMD Athlon 64 processors enable our customer base to purchase 64-bit enabled computers to take advantage of high-performance applications that also support their legacy 32-bit software programs.”

Leading Game Developers Are Blown Away By The Performance Of AMD64 Processors

“Zombie is migrating towards 64-bit tools for game development because it gives us unprecedented power to create dynamic, beautiful worlds and new game play with real-time physics, more interactive objects, more shaders and real-time lights,” said John Williamson, president of Zombie, Inc. “AMD64 architecture lets developers like us build and compile faster, paint in real time on 3D models and tweak in real time. For consumers, 64 bits gives both more memory to load polygons and textures and more power to manipulate them, accessing unprecedented levels of realism, interactivity and detail in their worlds.”

Crytek, Epic Games and Valve Software are currently developing their top titles on AMD64 platform-based servers and workstations for maximum processing power and bandwidth, and ultimately enhanced game play.

“We are sure that the CryENGINE will use each and every bit of PC hardware to its maximum capacity, so we see AMD64 gaming as an enormous win for the industry,” said Cevat Yerli, president and CEO, Crytek. “It has opened up endless possibilities, offering better performance for dynamic and emergent dimensions of game play. AMD64 is the premier platform for the gaming industry.”

“We're really thrilled with the leadership role AMD has taken in introducing 64-bit technology into mainstream computing,” said Tim Sweeney, Epic Games. “Our upcoming 64-bit version of Unreal Tournament 2004 is just the first step in our adoption of the new architecture, and we are already well underway in developing next-generation tools and technology that do things wholly impossible on 32-bit platforms.”

“Valve has created and maintained a 64-bit port of our CounterStrike servers, and the AMD64 version runs much faster for us than the 32-bit version when we do a clock-by-clock comparison,” said Gabe Newell, Valve managing director. “Steampowered.com is running on an AMD64 machine and we have achieved a 35% performance improvement and the ability to host more than we would on a 32-bit system.”

In addition, Jolt and Super Computer International, two of the leading game hosting companies, are extensively using AMD Opteron processors to maximize the multiplayer gaming experience. Havok, a top physics middleware, is beginning to develop for AMD64 to enable customers, partners and users to experience more powerful 64-bit physics capabilities.

Altså en ytelsesøkning mellom 35 og 57% ifølge dette :)
